Ghost Farmers

A farmer climbed into his cab one frosty October morn.
He had the combine full of fuel. He was gonna harvest corn.
As he pulled into the field he looked high up in the sky.
He saw them in their seed corn caps. He heard their mournful cry.

He looked into their faces and some he knew quite well.
He hoped they'd been in heaven and they hadn't come from hell.
He asked the ghosts a question saying, "What is it that you want?"
"Are you here to help me harvest? Or did you come here to haunt?"
The ghosts gathered 'round him out there in that cornfield.
We haven't come to harvest. We're here to check YOUR yield.
You've lived upon this land since the day that you were born.
There's more to being a farmer than simply growing corn.

There's people around you and upon you they depend
To be a husband, father, a neighbor, and a friend.
So treat these people kindly and this warning you'd best heed
Or you'll be farming down in hell growing cockleburr and buttonweed.
