The STORY of HOME MADE -- HAND MADE ROPE

This rope maker is smooth
working antique machine.
Hawkeye Rope Machine
by Hawkeye Manufacturing, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Apparently the Hawkeye
is a successor of New Era: the parts are identical.
This rope maker is
8.5 inches tall, 7 inches wide and counting the handle,
it is about 7 inches
deep.
Bolt it to a board which
you can clamp on your picnic table,
and you are ready to
make rope.
If you have one that
turns less than smoothly, first try oil.
Some machines need to
be re-adjusted: simply loosen the 3 screws
that hold it together
and realign the two halves so it can turn free.
Don't take it all the
way apart
unless you have both
patience and skill in that sort of thing.
The steel
rope tool is my design: not original to the machine,
it has a pointed
end for rope splicing.
The size is similar
but a little larger than the original:
approximately 3 incheswide,
6 inches tall, and 3/8 inch thick.
I posted 5
booklets on this web page:
the 23 page booklet on
the Sherwood Improved Hand Rope and Wire Cabling
Machine Pat 1913
(NES WIZARD); the 14 page Rope Making booklet for the
New Era Machine; and the 8 page Instruction Folder for the New Era Rope
Machine.
The 1908 Ideal/ Berg
Booklet, and the Royal Rope Machine Instruction Folder,
These books also explain
how use the machine to unmake ( unlay) a broken
section of rope, and
then remake rope for nearly invisible rope splicing, how to use
cloth rags for rope-
rug making, and many other rope maker's "lost secrets".
