Rope Making NEW ERA Pat 1911 Page 1 of 14

Rope Making with New Era. The
New Era was a
marked improvement
over non geared rope makers, and also
the prior
exposed geared rope machines.
The enclosed ring
gear drive is less likely to get things tangled than
open gear rope machines
like the 1901 Bucklin/ Thomas. The New Era is basically
a
a 3 to 1 gear ratio.
A real time saver on long ropes.
The New Era machine
Patented by A. D. Long of Fairfield, Iowa was later
licenced to several differerent
companies under various names, including
Hawkeye Manufacturing,
Cedar Rapids, Iowa . The Hawkeye also had
listed locations
of Minneapolis, Mn and Spooner, Wisconsin.
According to John Flory
of New Jersey, The Metters Rope Machine
manufactured in Australia
appears to be identical,
as if cast from
New Era original molds.
The original New Era patent
diagram shows a machine with 4 outside hooks
and one center hook.
I have never seen a 5 hook New Era, but the Wonder
Rope Maker appears to
be a larger, heavier version of the New Era.
