The STORY of HOME MADE --
HAND
MADE ROPE

Not all of us rope makers
have
twisted minds.
My grandsons have
now made rope with me
using the rope machine
handed down to me from my great-grandfather.

Making your own rope machine
is not hard.
The learning curve is shorter
if you can watch.
I will try and do more photos
when I put the next machines
together.
The
photos of my Meyer Rope Machine
could
help you see how my hooks fit together

My earlier rope machines were
made from 1/4 inch
diameter steel hooks.
I now like to use 3/8 inch
diameter
stock.
An easy hook source is eye
hooks
from a hardware store,
then cut a chunk out.
The flat steel "arms"
you may make your own as I do,
or find something that is
pre-drilled
like flat steel
reinforcement pieces for
wooden
screen doors.
Just cut them to size and
the holes as needed.

rope
machine.
Made from saw mill rough
cut oak.
Rope winch board fits into
the slot on base.
My rope machine is based
on one passed down to me
from my
great-grandfather.

strung with orange plastic
baler twine.
Multiple strands have been
cranked into 4 single-
plies of rope. Both ropes
in photo below are
ready to be taken from the
rope machine.
While some demonstrators
just tape the end
and cut off the
surplus,
I take a minute to
splice this end into a slip
loop.
A whip-tie on the end is
another alternative
to have a finished rope.
When string twine for
thick
or long rope,
I usually pull twine from
two or more
twine balls at the same
time,
to save walking.
