The STORY of HOME MADE -- HAND MADE ROPE

The Small Wonder has 3 outside hooks
and one center gathering hook
vary similar to the New Era .
The  small Wonder Machine.
photo used with permission:  thanks to
Ron & Shirley Watson's Fine Antiques &
Collectibles, Manitou Manitoba.
This extremely rare machine
has  a  Dec.23, 1919 Patent date on it.
We believe that this may be a Canadian patent,
as we have not been able to find it in the US Patent lists.

I bought my First  Large Wonder Rope Maker  for some over $100 via
an EBAY auction. It had been broken and welded in several places.
I believe that I can clean up some of the old welds and restore it
to good working condition, but I am happy even  having it
as a shelf machine.  It looks so much like a large
double size version of the New Era .

On the bottom of my machine, cast in the iron :
The Wonder MFG. Co.  Brantford Ont. Pat. App'd For
It  is heavy cast iron and measures
13"  high  and 11 ½" wide.

Research information on the  Wonder and other similar machines
takes a lot of time pouring through old phone books and magazines.
Most of the Wonder machines that have been offered on EBAY
have been from Western Canada.
Many including the Wonder Rope Machines that I own  simply say
"Patent Pending",  with no actual Patent date.

I surmise that the Wonder  may  have started out being manufactured
in  Niles, Mich., before moving  to Ontario,  Canada.

The Wonder Rope Machine, a  Large  5 hook Machine.
The Wonder is geared 4.5 to 1
( turns of the hooks to turns of the handle )
It is the most massive home  Rope Machine that I have used.
Possibly because of the size and weight of the Wonder Rope Maker,
many of these machines  been dropped and broken.

This Machine is from the Collection of  Dave Brown of  Wisconsin
This  machine has the original handle and appears well cared for.
